Mahishasurmardini Durga should be your role model ! - Dr. Sushma Ahuja
ForewordThis work is the outcome of sincere and hard work of Dr. Sushma Ahuja who has studied the sculptures from temples of Hadoti and Khajuraho and rock cut temples of Ellora. It is interesting to read the descriptions of art styles of sculptures where the author has given minute details of significant features of development of various forms and creative genius of artists in embellishing temples of different phases of Indian history. Mahishasurmardini and goddesses in the temples, represent the empowerment of women and simultaneously inculcates the feeling among the worshippers and visitors to the temples to develop respect and admiration towards matri-shakti. Besides the female deities, human and semi-divine female figurines also form part of the study who all are capable of inspiring general people, more directly than just going through the religious texts which describe their significance. Dr. Ahuja has covered three areas which represent some of the finest works of art and architecture and has also made the correct choice for study and comparative analysis of Brahminical, Buddhist and Jaina traditions in Indian art. Besides studying the sculptured panels, this work also enriches one’s knowledge about the historical developments including religious, socio-economic and cultural scenario attached with the creative genius of Indian artists and their wonderful creation. I congratulate her for dedicated hard work in bringing out this book which I am sure, would be liked by the scholars and lay readers alike in understanding the intricacies and elegant heritage of the country.
